Scalping strategies for futures prop firms: an honest review
Scalping is permitted at most futures prop firms. That is the easy half of the answer, and it is the half most articles stop at. The harder question is whether the economics survive the rules, and for a lot of scalping approaches they do not.
Which firms allow scalping
| Firm | Scalping | Minimum hold | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucid Trading | Allowed on all accounts | None | Sub-5-second trades producing over half your profit are flagged for review |
| Take Profit Trader | Allowed | None stated | Bots prohibited; funded PRO switches to intraday drawdown |
| Topstep | Allowed manually | None stated | Scalping and high-frequency algorithms excluded |
| Apex | Allowed | None stated | Consistency at payout caps a single strong session |
| MyFundedFutures | Allowed | Varies by plan | Rapid plan uses intraday trailing — harsh on quick re-entries |
| Several others | Allowed with conditions | 30–60 s at some firms | Read the minimum hold before assuming |
Three rules that quietly kill scalping strategies
Minimum hold times. Some firms impose a floor of 30 to 60 seconds per trade. If your edge lives inside that window, the strategy is not slow — it is prohibited.
Behaviour flags on very fast fills. Lucid allows scalping but reviews accounts where trades held under five seconds generate more than half the profit. The rule is not a hold-time ban; it is a pattern flag, which is harder to plan around because it depends on your distribution rather than a single trade.
Consistency at payout. A scalping strategy that produces one dominant session runs straight into a 30–50% consistency cap. Details in the consistency rule explained.
The arithmetic problem
This is the part that decides it, and it has nothing to do with firm rules.
A round-turn on a micro contract costs roughly a dollar in commission, plus slippage. Assume half a tick to a full tick per side and the all-in cost lands near two dollars per round turn per contract on MNQ or MES. On minis it is roughly three times that per contract.
Now run a scalping cadence. At 100 trades against a $3,000 target on a 50K account, costs consume $600 to $900 — a fifth to a third of the target before you account for a single losing trade. At 300 trades, the strategy has to earn the target twice over.
A strategy with twenty trades and a wider target pays those costs once. This is not an argument against scalping; it is an argument that scalping requires a materially higher gross edge to clear the same net target, and most backtests never show it because they model fills optimistically. We covered how to model this properly in commissions, slippage and fills in Pine backtests.
The execution problem
Latency between a signal and a fill is dead cost to a scalper and rounding error to a swing strategy. On a routed prop setup you have TradingView, a bridge and a broker in the chain. That is fine for a strategy with a wide entry window and expensive for one measured in seconds.
The same applies to news events: increased volatility widens spreads exactly when a fast strategy needs them tight.
Best prop firm for scalping
If you are set on scalping, the ranking is: no minimum hold time, end-of-day drawdown rather than intraday, and no consistency rule at payout. On current rules that points at Lucid Flex (no hold minimum, EOD on every plan, no funded consistency) and Take Profit Trader for cadence, with the caveat that TPT switches funded PRO accounts to intraday drawdown and prohibits bots.
Avoid intraday-trailing products for a strategy that re-enters frequently: every unbanked excursion permanently tightens the floor. See EOD vs intraday trailing drawdown.
Our own configurations sit at the opposite end of the trade-frequency spectrum for exactly the cost reason above — the per-tier sizing is on the portfolios page.
FAQ
Do prop firms allow scalping?
Most futures prop firms permit scalping, including Lucid Trading, Take Profit Trader, Apex, Topstep and MyFundedFutures. The conditions differ: some impose a minimum hold time of 30 to 60 seconds, Topstep excludes scalping and high-frequency algorithms specifically, and Lucid flags accounts where sub-five-second trades produce more than half the profit.
What is the best prop firm for scalping?
Rank on three things: no minimum hold time, end-of-day rather than intraday drawdown, and no consistency rule at payout. On current rules Lucid Flex scores well on all three. Take Profit Trader suits the cadence but moves funded PRO accounts to intraday drawdown and prohibits bots.
Why do scalping strategies fail prop evaluations?
Usually cost rather than rules. An all-in round turn of roughly two dollars per micro contract means 100 trades against a $3,000 target consumes a fifth to a third of the target. High trade counts require a materially higher gross edge to clear the same net result, and most backtests model fills too optimistically.
Is there a minimum hold time on prop firm accounts?
At some firms, typically 30 to 60 seconds. Others have no stated minimum but monitor patterns instead, flagging accounts where very fast trades dominate the profit. Check the specific rule document rather than assuming.
