How to pair strategies on one funded account

The point of running more than one system isn’t more trades. It’s fewer ugly months. Here are the three construction rules we use, and the one sizing rule that makes the pair survivable.

Rule 1: different instrument

Nasdaq and gold don’t have bad weeks for the same reasons. An index grinding sideways after CPI has nothing to do with what gold does around the same print. Same-instrument pairs (two Nasdaq systems) share too much weather — when the market regime starves one, it usually starves both.

Rule 2: different mechanism

An opening-range system and an asymmetric-R system fail differently. One goes quiet when the open stops trending; the other goes quiet when volatility compresses. Two trend systems on two instruments is better than one, but it’s still one idea wearing two hats.

Rule 3: different clock

Session structure matters. A system that decides everything in the first hour and one that manages positions across the day get starved by different conditions. When the reasons for a flat month are different, the flat months land in different places — that’s the entire mechanism, and it’s visible in the data: our Open/Trace pair had zero overlapping flat months across the last twelve.

The sizing rule that makes it work

Pairing done wrong doubles your risk instead of smoothing it. The rule: size the pair together, against the account’s drawdown limit — not each system as if it were alone. That’s what “pre-sized” means in our compositions: two to four systems per account tier, with combined worst-case drawdown fitting inside the firm’s floor. The single systems have louder months. The composition has fewer ugly ones.
