What is a bracket order? Entry, stop and target in one moment

A bracket order is an entry sent together with its stop loss and take profit, so the trade is never open without a defined worst case. All ten systems in Puravida Edge's Watch It Trade video do exactly that; the worst live day on the PVE Index Forex version used 29% of its daily limit (PV_EDGE Master Data, Apr – Sep 2026).

How does a bracket order work?

Entry, stop and target: one moment

The entry, the stop and the target are linked. When the entry fills, the stop and the target are already working. When one of them fills, the other is cancelled. There is no gap between "I'm in" and "I know what I can lose".

Why does a bracket order matter on a prop firm account?

Because prop firm accounts end on one bad day, not on one bad quarter. If every trade carries its stop from the first second, the worst case of each trade is known, and the worst day of the account becomes a number you can measure against the limit.

Stop placed later, by hand Stop placed with the entry
Worst case known at entry no yes
Can be moved in the moment yes no (in a systematic strategy)
Worst day measurable in advance no yes

On the PVE Index Forex version, the worst live day was $1,469 against a $5,000 daily loss limit (live, April – September 2026). How the limit itself is measured is in the prop firm daily loss limit explained guide.

Does a bracket order guarantee the stop price?

No. A stop becomes a market order once it is touched, so a fast market can fill it worse than the stop price. What the bracket guarantees is that the stop exists from the first second, not that it fills at an exact price. Size the trade with that in mind; the position size calculator works from the stop distance.

How do systematic strategies use it?

Every family in automated trading strategies for prop firms places entry, stop and target together, and none of them moves the stop afterwards. Ten of them run on one account in the PVE Index; smaller sets start from two strategies in the portfolios.

FAQ

Is a bracket order the same as an OCO order? An OCO (one-cancels-the-other) pair is the exit half of a bracket: stop and target, where one fill cancels the other. A bracket adds the entry to that pair.

Can I move the stop in a bracket order? Most platforms let you. A systematic strategy does not, which is the point: the worst case stays where it was placed.

Does a bracket order help with a trailing drawdown? It keeps the worst case of each trade known. How a trailing floor moves is a separate rule; see trailing vs static vs daily loss drawdown.
